Dear John,
Last week, I wrote a column for The Guardian newspaper warning that Elon Musk is rapidly transforming his wealth into a huge source of unaccountable political power to reinstall Donald Trump in the White House.
In the column, I explained how Musk’s pro-Trump super PAC is spending millions on pro-Trump voter outreach, while Musk himself is using his social media platform, X (formerly Twitter), to push out a flood of pro-Trump lies and disinformation.
How did Musk respond to my column? With personal insults, taking to X to call me a “miniature wanker” and “Robert Reichtard.”
I’m not afraid of Elon Musk and his bullying. In fact, his infantile response simply provides more evidence of how bonkers he is — and why we cannot allow Musk’s efforts to elect Trump to succeed.
That’s why I’m writing to you today. Inequality Media Civic Action is running our biggest election year campaign ever, pushing out a wave of proven-effective persuasion videos aimed at the key voter blocs who will decide the election.
But to reach the millions of voters we need to contact by Election Day, we’re counting on your help. Will you donate $5 a month to help educate the public and keep Donald Trump out of the White House?
Yes, Robert! I’ll start a monthly donation.
No, I’m sorry, I can’t chip in monthly.
In addition to pouring millions into his pro-Trump super PAC, Elon Musk has turned X into a massive megaphone for MAGA disinformation and election subversion.
In July, Musk reposted a faked version of Kamala Harris’s first campaign video with an altered voice track sounding like Harris and saying she doesn’t “know the first thing about running the country” and is the “ultimate diversity hire.”
Earlier this week, he posted a fake image of Kamala Harris dressed in a Soviet military uniform with the comment, “Kamala vows to be a communist dictator on day one. Can you believe she wears that outfit!?”
In all, Musk has posted 50 false election claims on X so far this year, which have gotten a total of 1.2 billion views, according to a new report from the Center for Countering Digital Hate. None of them had a “community note” from X’s supposed fact-checking system.
Meanwhile, the Michigan secretary of state has accused the Musk-supported America PAC of tricking people into sharing personal data by offering to help users register to vote and then sending them to anti-Harris and pro-Trump ads. Worse yet, evidence is mounting that Russia and other foreign agents are using X to disrupt this year’s presidential race, and Musk has done little to stop them.
And what happens if Trump wins? Trump and Musk have both floated the idea of governing together if Trump wins a second term.
“I think it would be great to just have a government efficiency commission,” Musk said in a conversation with Trump earlier this month streamed on X. “And I’d be happy to help out on such a commission.”
No thanks, Elon.
Friends, we cannot let Donald Trump back in the Oval Office ever, and Inequality Media Civic Action is using our massive reach on social media to persuade the voters we need to beat Trump. But all of this work relies on donations from grassroots supporters like you.
Will you donate $5 a month to help educate the public and keep Donald Trump out of the White House?
Yes, Robert! I’ll start a monthly donation.
No, I’m sorry, I can’t chip in monthly.
Thank you for joining with us,
Robert Reich
