Significant drop in youth e-cigarette use marks progress, but nearly 40% of teens who vape frequently remain at high risk for nicotine addiction, a serious public health concern

The 2024 National Youth Tobacco Survey (NYTS) shows significant progress in reducing youth e-cigarette use, with nearly half a million fewer middle and high school students currently vaping. However, among middle and high school students who currently vape, nearly 40% – over 620,000 teens – report using e-cigarettes frequently (38.4%) signaling signs of persistent nicotine addiction. Youth nicotine pouch use remains low at 1.8%, but 29.3% of current users report frequent use, and 22.4% use pouches daily, a concerning trend given the high nicotine levels.

11 leading organizations urge U.S. Supreme Court to uphold FDA’s marketing denial orders for flavored e-cigarettes

Eleven leading medical, public health and community organizations have filed an amicus brief with the U.S. Supreme Court urging the Court to reverse a decision by the U.S. Court of Appeals for the Fifth Circuit that struck down the FDA’s marketing denial orders for certain flavored e-liquids. The Supreme Court has agreed to hear the caseFood and Drug Administration v. Wages and White Lion Investments, LLC, dba Triton Distribution – in its upcoming term. The case involves FDA marketing denial orders for nicotine e-liquids with flavors that clearly appeal to kids, including “Jimmy the Juice Man Peachy Strawberry,” “Suicide Bunny Mother’s Milk and Cookies,” “Pink Lemonade,” “Iced Pineapple Express” and “Killer Kustard Blueberry.”
