President's Message

In the U.S., suicide is the second leading cause of death among people aged 10-14, the 3rd leading cause of death among those aged 15-24, and the 12th leading cause of death overall, according to NAMI, the National Alliance on Mental Illness.

Mental health challenges for K-12 students have increased significantly in the past several years. School nurses are frontline healthcare professionals and frequently are the first school staff to identify students with symptoms of stress, anxiety, depression, and other behavioral health challenges.

September is Suicide Prevention Month — a time to raise awareness and shift public perception, spreading hope and vital information to people affected by suicide and suicidal ideation. NAMI has created a toolkit to support mental health champions in promoting the observance. Use these resources to promote awareness efforts!
