John,
For generations, the Democratic Party has been the preeminent political voice for millions of working-class Americans who struggle for economic justice and a fair shot at the American Dream. In Oregon, where we especially cherish the labor-adjacent values of community and mutual support, Democrats have a continuing opportunity to showcase the incredible strength of our solidarity.
Thousands of Fred Meyer grocery and meat department workers have returned to work following an Unfair Labor Practice (ULP) strike over Labor Day Weekend by United Food and Commercial Workers Local 555.
This strike demonstrated the incredible strength of union members who stood together for better treatment in the workplace as well as the outpouring of community supporters who refused to cross those picket lines.
But the work is not done!
Fred Meyer needs to follow Federal Labor Law and respect workers’ rights under the National Labor Relations Act. They also need to stop price gouging customers!
It came to light in Kroger's FTC trial that the company engaged in widespread price gouging on everyday essentials like milk and eggs. Our Presidential Nominee Kamala Harris has committed to ending price gouging in grocery stores, and holding bad actors accountable.
While the workers have returned to their jobs, the battle for a fair contract is ongoing. UFCW Local 555 has remained dedicated to securing a contract that ensures fair wages, secures health & welfare, and strengthens retirement benefits for all workers.
Fred Meyer’s parent company, Kroger, meanwhile, is dedicated to continuing to increase dividend payments to its corporate shareholders, which were recently increased over 13% for the 18th straight year.
We are calling on Oregon Democrats and other like-minded supporters to support UFCW Local 555 by not shopping at Fred Meyer until a fair agreement is reached and Fred Meyer’s admitted price gouging has stopped.
Here’s what you can do to help:
*
Even
though
the
picket
lines
are
down,
don’t
shop
at
Fred
Meyer
stores
while
the
contract
negotiations
are
ongoing.
*
If
you
have
prescriptions
at
a
Fred
Meyer
pharmacy,
have
your
doctor’s
office
or
a
new
pharmacy
transfer
those
prescriptions
elsewhere.
*
Shop
at
union-represented
stores
where
possible,
such
as
Safeway
or
Albertsons,
or
explore
local
options
like
small
businesses
and
farmers
markets.
And please watch this short video about Fred Meyer's price gouging and share with your friends on social media:
Together, we will help lift up the voices of hard-working Oregonians who are standing up for themselves, their families, and for workers everywhere!
