Andrea Circle Bear should still be alive — holding her newborn baby in her arms. But instead, she died in prison on Tuesday in Fort Worth, Texas due to COVID-19.
Andrea’s story is all too familiar — trapped in prison during a global pandemic because of systemic inequities and the failed war on drugs. That she was in prison at all was cruel and negligent.
The COVID-19 crisis is reaching catastrophic levels in our jails and prisons. Every day the Federal Bureau of Prisons refuses to act and pursue decarceration is another day they are putting lives at risk.
I am demanding that the Federal Bureau of Prisons takes immediate action to decarcerate and release folks who pose no threat to public safety. COVID-19 must not be a death sentence for those behind the wall.
Our criminal injustice system is draconian, xenophobic, and fundamentally broken. Overcrowding and unsanitary conditions in our federal facilities, and an uneven ability to provide critical medical care, have long left those behind the wall especially vulnerable to infectious diseases like COVID-19.
