Whether we live in suburban towns or city neighborhoods, everyone in Allegheny County deserves safe, reliable, dignified access to the places we need to go. Across the county, 30% of the population does not drive a car. The Week Without Driving is a nationwide movement to link the needs of disabled individuals and people of all ages with environmental movements and accessible community planning. Together, we will illustrate challenges and opportunities for non-drivers and call for change that improves mobility for all.

“My experience getting around Pittsburgh as someone who doesn’t drive has been a mix of positive and negative. On the one hand, we have a fairly decent public transit system in Pittsburgh, although with cuts to service it’s been going downhill rapidly and there are now fewer buses going to fewer places. On the other, we lack certain services like on-demand wheelchair-accessible rideshare vehicles. Walking is also a huge challenge for me in my wheelchair, between deteriorating sidewalks and obstructions such as sandwich boards and sidewalk dining."

This program has the potential to provide working class people across the county unlimited transit passes- freedom of movement- that will both save money on their existing transit trips and incentivize more travel by transit. Moreover, it will increase the amount of dedicated operating revenue for the agency, through new transit fare payments by corporations and developers, large non-profits, and even municipalities like the City of Pittsburgh and Allegheny County.

Whether we live in McKees Rocks or McKeesport, the North Hills or the South Hills, all in Allegheny County deserve transportation access that is accessible and reliable. Pittsburghers for Public Transit owes an incredible amount of gratitude to the Thomas Merton Center for getting our transit rider union off the ground. For nearly a decade, TMC incubated our organization and we called their annex at 5119 Penn Ave our home.

A suite of zoning changes were announced today by Mayor Gainey that are aimed at increasing affordable housing supply in the City of Pittsburgh. We're still waiting to see details of the plan, but the changes broadly look right in line with PPT's strategic plan goals to build more affordable housing near our transit system's best service.
