Even before the crisis, too many people were living paycheck to paycheck, struggling with the high cost of housing. At the start of April, housing advocates called on federal, state, and local elected officials to cancel rent and mortgage payments for the duration of the pandemic. Unfortunately, Congress has failed to protect the very housing that is keeping us safe.
Tomorrow is also May Day, a day of action historically led by workers and immigrants to demonstrate strength and solidarity. That’s why the CPD Network, led by the Alliance of Californians for Community Empowerment, Arkansas Community Organization, CASA, Churches United for Fair Housing, Make the Roads in New York, Pennsylvania, and New Jersey, One Pennsylvania and many others are coming together with a clear demand: CANCEL RENT!
From Brooklyn, to Oakland, Sacramento, Little Rock, Philadelphia, and Orlando, we are expecting thousands of people to take action to cancel rent and mortgages this May Day. Tenants will be participating in rent strikes, organizing car caravans, hosting town halls with tenants and elected officials, and doing banner drops to call on federal, state and local elected officials to protect renters in this critical moment. Give $10 now to fight for a future where no one has to live in fear of not having a roof over their head.
