The races that could determine control of the Minnesota Legislature and it’s Reproductive Freedom policies

The Legislature enacted or changed many of Minnesota's laws in the past two years, largely due to one fact: Democrats controlled state government — the House, Senate and governor's office.
Heading into this fall's election, Republicans and their allies hope to change that. The entire Minnesota House is on the ballot in November, and if the GOP wins control they can put the brakes on the DFL legislative agenda and a pro-choice majority for the next two years. The Senate isn't on the ballot until 2026, but DFL state Sen. Kelly Morrison's retirement to run for the congressional seat vacated by Rep. Dean Phillips gives Republicans an opportunity to win control of the chamber, which is currently tied 33-33. We must elect Ann Johnson Stewart.
Of the 134 seats in the Minnesota House of Representatives, 63 are held by Republicans and 68 by DFLers after several post-session resignations. As of now, pro-choice legislators fall along party lines, with every sitting DFLer identifying as pro-choice and every Republican identifying as anti-choice. While either party can win any seat, only a handful are seen by the two parties and associated groups as ripe for changing hands — and where both sides will focus campaign efforts.

Supermajority of U.S. women ages 18-49 support legal abortion

While abortion remains one of the most contentious issues separating the Republican and Democratic presidential candidates, a new survey finds that regardless of political affiliation, nearly 15% of women of reproductive age have had an abortion at some point in their life, while three-quarters of those same women believe abortion should be legal in most or all cases.
Those findings were among the survey results released this month by the nonprofit KFF think tank, which polled more than 3,900 women ages 18 to 49 from May 13 to June 18.

What’s IUI? What’s IVF? A look at the fertility treatments the Walz family is talking about

The broader scope of fertility treatments entered the spotlight this week after Minnesota Gov. Tim Walz and his wife Gwen shared that they had children through a less commonly known procedure.
Since Vice President Kamala Harris selected Gov. Walz as her running mate, he has discussed his family’s fertility journey during speeches in Pennsylvania, Nebraska and mostly recently at the Democratic National Convention in Chicago, Illinois.
“It took Gwen and I years,” Walz said on Wednesday night. “But we had access to fertility treatments. And when our daughter was born, we named her Hope.”
This week, the Walzes clarified that they conceived via intrauterine insemination, not in vitro fertilization.
IUI involves injecting sperm into the uterus during or just before ovulation to increase the chances of fertilization and pregnancy.
“Our fertility journey was an incredibly personal and difficult experience. Like so many who have experienced these challenges, we kept it largely to ourselves at the time — not even sharing the details with our wonderful and close family,” Gwen Walz said in a statement provided to States Newsroom. “The only person who knew in detail what we were going through was our next door neighbor. She was a nurse and helped me with the shots I needed as part of the IUI process.”
