Illinois. On Tuesday, the US Department of Education announced the

resolution of a complaint first filed in 2020 against the University of Illinois Urbana-Champaign that alleged “numerous incidents of antisemitism, including the recurring appearance of swastikas throughout campus; mezuzahs ripped off students’ doors; and a brick being thrown through the window of a Jewish fraternity.” As part of the settlement, the University agreed to review and revise its policies for nondiscrimination and demonstrations, train law enforcement and staff to process complaints and provide ED with information on any complaints of discrimination based on shared ancestry during the 2024-2025 academic year. As part of a new agreement with Illini Hillel,
Hillel International and Jewish United Fund (Chicago’s federation), the University also would update its

nondiscrimination policy to cover discrimination based on a Jewish students’ connections to Israel and Zionism. Lonnie Nasatir, president of JUF, told Jewish Insider that “the terms in this settlement are the best achieved across the country and will have a significant positive impact on the campus climate for Jewish students.”

CUNY Baruch College. Anti-Israel protesters at New York’s Baruch College targeted
[link removed]
Hillel on Tuesday. Outside the building, they shouted such pithy slogans as “Baruch Hillel, go to hell,” “Dogs off campus” and “All Zionists are terrorists.” It is unclear what these chants or Jewish students eating dinner have to do with their political agenda. ADL and other organizations quickly

condemned this appalling display and called on school administrators to do the same. At the scene, brave counter-protesters held Israeli and American flags and chanted “Am Yisrael Chai” and “USA, USA” in the face of this violent rhetoric.

Sadly, this isn’t the first instance of anti-Israel hostility at Baruch this semester. Last week, protesters outside the Hillel center displayed a banner depicting an assault rifle and a banner that read: “Let the intifada pave the way for people’s war.” It is unclear if the Baruch protesters are aware that their college’s namesake was one of the most influential Jewish public servants and statesmen of the first half of the 20th century.

Princeton. Around 150 anti-Israel protesters

marched across the Princeton University campus in the Garden State school’s first major protest of the academic year. Many protesters criticized Princeton’s new

website on protests and free expression, but administrators reiterated the website didn’t constitute a new policy; instead, it's meant to “increase awareness and understanding in the community.” Speakers at the anti-Israel demonstration encouraged the crowd to attend the upcoming hearings for 13 University affiliates who were charged with trespassing after they occupied a university building in the spring. Meanwhile, a dozen counter-protesters held signs commemorating Hersh Goldberg-Polin, an Israeli-American hostage who was murdered by Hamas over the weekend.

Harvard. Five Harvard University professors wrote

chalk messages and displayed posters near the school’s famous John Harvard statue on Monday, protesting Harvard’s new policies that ban chalking and affixing unapproved signs to Harvard property. University police took photos of the professors and messages, and the chalk was quickly washed away.

North Carolina State. North Carolina State University has revised its

antidiscrimination policies to comport with the SHALOM Act, according to the school’s student newspaper. This shift follows an August
[link removed]
settlement with the Brandeis Center over allegations the University “failed to address a hostile environment resulting from multiple incidents of harassment of a student based on her shared Jewish ancestry” and the passage of the SHALOM Act by the North Carolina General Assembly in June. With this legislation, the state of North Carolina formally adopted the working

definition of antisemitism outlined by the International Holocaust Remembrance Alliance among other provisions.

Student Engagement. A new
[link removed]
study of 1,000 Jewish and 1,500 non-Jewish students at nearly 200 campuses with a significant Jewish population as well as focus groups found that Jewish engagement spiked after the attacks of October 7, but leveled off by the spring. “More than 40 percent of Jewish respondents felt close to a Jewish community after Oct. 7, versus 26 percent the year before — but this number fell to 33 percent by spring 2024,”
[link removed]
reported JTA. The study also found that the share of Jewish students who feel proud of their Jewish identity has increased consistently since 2022, even as these students have faced higher rates of antisemitic attacks. Unfortunately, most Jewish students agree there is a “social penalty” for supporting Israel, and one third of Jewish students say they “need to hide their Jewishness to fit in.” Study author Dr. Eitan Hersh of Tufts said: “The Jewish students are kind of
[link removed]
anguished , because they’re like, ‘Why am I not allowed to have a complicated view on this?’ You just have to fall in line in this campus environment.”

Pride of Panthers. The Jewish community at the University of Pittsburgh is responding with pride and
[link removed]
resilience after two visibly Jewish students were attacked from behind while walking to Hillel on Friday night. The 52-year-old attacker allegedly smashed a glass bottle over one student’s head and cut the other on the cheek, but as the University’s director of Chabad points out, “They fought back [...] They feel they were attacked because they were Jewish, they feel they were targeted for being Jewish, and they are even more proud after than before.” Both students, and many others, have since committed to wearing a kippah and a Star of David. And later this week, the Panther community will come together for a solidarity BBQ and a thousand-person Shabbat dinner.
Pennsylvania Governor Josh Shapiro released a statement on Sunday, saying "No matter what you look like, where you come from, or who you do or do not pray to, you deserve to feel safe on your campus here in Pennsylvania."

Dorm Posts. In the early hours of Tuesday morning, a

mezuzah went missing from the doorpost of a Jewish freshman’s dorm room. Harvard Chabad Rabbi Hirschy Zarchi shared his outrage, saying “we must recognize this incident for what it truly is: a hate crime [...] It’s not just a matter of vandalism; it is an attack on the very identity of the Jewish community at Harvard.” University police are investigating the incident. Meanwhile, Jewish students at Harvard took matters into their own

hands, responding to this incident by affixing more mezuzot to more of their dorm rooms -- with pride.

Ukraine Strong. Less than 125 miles from the Russian frontline, the Jewish community of Dnipro in
[link removed]
Ukraine has continued to operate its synagogue, school and even its matzah factory, which still employs 70 people and produces around 100 tons of matzah every year. In fact, thanks to a network of generators donated by Jewish communities worldwide, “Every community building, from the kindergarten to the clinics, the Menorah Center and the old age home, are energy-independent.” Faced with emigration, economic disruption and the constant threat of deadly Russian missiles, kosher slaughtering remains possible, the chief rabbi remains and Jewish life continues in Dnipro.

Personal Best. Surprising even himself, Jewish Paralympian Ezra Frech broke his personal record in the men’s 100-meter sprint on Monday, securing his first ever
[link removed]
gold medal. Frech is a jumping specialist who only planned to use the 100-meter race as a “warm up” for Tuesday’s high jump competition. On Tuesday, Frech broke the Paralympics high jump record and secured his

second gold medal. Born with congenital differences that left him without a knee or fibula in his left leg and without fingers on his left hand, Frech is well-known in Southern California as the co-founder of Angel City Sports, an organization dedicated to bringing sports opportunities to people with physical differences and impairments. With his athleticism, courage and determination, Ezra Frech is a role model for everyone — not just for people with disabilities or Jews, but for everyone.
