Over the past month, since Vice President Harris became our presidential nominee, people have been asking me: what does this mean for winning Michigan?
Here’s what I’ve been saying: while we’ve undoubtedly seen a real surge of energy from Democrats on the ground, a fundamental truth remains — Michigan is a swing state, the 20% of independent voters are critical, and even the dynamic change of the ticket doesn’t change the basics.
And now, as the dust settles on the Democratic convention, we have new data to confirm it: polling conducted this week by the Detroit News and WDIV-TV shows Trump with a slight lead over Vice President Harris in Michigan:
Donald Trump: 44.7%
Kamala Harris: 43.5%
And with Michigan likely to be one of the few states – or even THE state – that decides the presidential election, it’s a reminder that we have a ton of work to do to make every day count between now and November 5th. The energy we’ve seen over the last month is not enough to take our foot off the gas. And winning here will take real work.
Because when a race is as close as this one, everything we do matters — every ad that’s aired, every voter we talk to, every door we knock, and yes, every dollar we raise from people like you in response to emails like this.
And because our Senate race is next top of the ticket in November under the presidential race, our campaign will certainly affect the outcome of the presidential election in Michigan. And vice versa.
That’s especially true because I have a history of doing better in the redder parts of the state. Reaching those voters — in places that haven’t seen a Democrat show up in 40 years — impacts Democrats up and down the ticket.
So with that in mind, I have to ask: will you chip in directly to my campaign for U.S. Senate and help me keep Michigan blue today?
