Chinese authorities wield sophisticated, ever-evolving tools to suppress dissent and maintain what they call “social stability.” Citizens are protesting anyway. Sometimes, they even win.

Election Watch: Uzbekistan
Next month, Uzbekistan will hold parliamentary elections. While elections in Uzbekistan lack genuine competition, these are the first under a new system where half of the chamber’s seats will be elected by a majority of the vote share.
