As we recognize Suicide Prevention Awareness Month, it's crucial to focus on the unique challenges faced by LGBTQ+ young people. At The Trevor Project, we know that LGBTQ+ young people are at a significantly higher risk for suicide, often due to experiences of discrimination, rejection, and trauma. Our 2024 National Survey on LGBTQ Youth Mental Health ([link removed](i.e.e-newsletter)&utm_source=emailsegment-wholefile1&utm_campaign=suicidepreventionmonth) reveals that 39% of LGBTQ+ young people seriously considered attempting suicide in the past year—including 46% of transgender and nonbinary young people.
It's important to understand the risk factors that contribute to these alarming statistics. LGBTQ+ youth who face victimization—like bullying, harassment, or physical abuse—are at an even higher risk for attempting suicide. The lack of acceptance from family, peers, and the broader community can exacerbate feelings of isolation and hopelessness. However, our survey found that LGBTQ+ youth who had at least one accepting adult were 40% less likely to report a suicide attempt, highlighting the life-saving power of support.

** How You Can Help: Simple Actions That Save Lives
------------------------------------------------------------
Supportive adults play a crucial role in suicide prevention. Recognizing the warning signs—such as withdrawal from social activities, changes in mood or behavior, and explicit talk of self-harm—can make all the difference. Simple actions, like consistently using a young person's chosen name and pronouns, creating safe and inclusive spaces, and actively listening to their experiences, can foster a sense of belonging and hope.
