Friend,
We almost hate to say
it…
Who are we kidding? We totally love
it. Trump’s campaign is a total train wreck. Demoting Chris and Susie
for Corey Lewandowski has gone… exactly how we said it
would.
More anger. More rage-posting. More
calling in to Fox News to rant. More JD attempting to be normal and
failing miserably. Watch the donut shop video. Just watch
it.
More… illegal photo ops taking
advantage of fallen soldiers (OK, we didn’t have that on our bingo
card).
And less... winning?
Seriously. Point us to one thing
Team Trump has done in the past couple weeks that has people saying,
“oh, what a brilliant strategy.” We’ll wait. It’s because it doesn’t
exist.
Our team at The Lincoln Project has
won (and lost) enough presidential campaigns over the last 40 years
that we tend to know when something’s a good idea. Trump on Twitter in
2016? Really smart. Trump on Twitter in 2024? Not so much.
Great presidential campaigns
understand their candidates’ strengths, and yes, their weaknesses.
Raging Trump is a weakness. Everything about JD is a weakness. How do
they not see it? (They probably do and they’re just happy to cash
their checks…)
Look across at the Kamala Harris
campaign and they keep hitting. Picking maybe the nicest dad in
America who happens to be a veteran football coach as VP. And when you
contrast that with whatever JD Vance is… yeah, they’re crushing
him.
And now CNN has him surrendering
his lead in the last swing state he was winning (Nevada).
That said: this thing’s gonna be
really close either way. Despite all the buffoonery on Team Trump and
all the energy around Team Democracy, Trump could still win. This
isn’t to scare you. It’s the truth.
Joe Biden won by roughly 70,000
votes in three swing states in 2020. Every swing state right now is
well within the margin of error. Trump will get around 45-47% of the
vote. It could be enough. That’s why every vote and every attempt to
reach out to a voter matters.
A good campaign matters. Getting
out there matters. Connecting with voters matters. Trump is doing none
of those things. He is in hiding. But just remember that unless we do
everything we possibly can, he could still win.
Let’s not let that happen
