Below we highlight a few ways that ConservAmerica marked the occasion, including celebrating on social media, publishing thought pieces, and participating in virtual webinars on clean water and rural America. Of course, we have to be honest and admit that it was disappointing not to be able to get together outdoors and attend events in person. On the other hand, the ongoing pandemic is a poignant reminder of the power of nature, the importance of being good stewards of the environment, and our shared commitment to a healthy environment and a strong economy. We hope everyone had a good month and is able to get out and enjoy the outdoors safely. ConservAmerica Monthly News Applying the Lessons of Crisis Mitigation to Natural Disasters This week, ConservAmerica’s President Jeff Kupfer co-authored an article in The Hill about the lessons we can draw from the COVID-19 response and how we can apply those to other national emergencies, from wildfires to tornados. He argues that crisis preparedness is critical to the economy and the lives of Americans. Read more here <[link removed]> . RFS Public Comments ConservAmerica this week joined 23 conservative groups on a letter to President Donald Trump urging him to support badly needed reforms to the Renewable Fuel Standard (RFS) program. You can read the letter here <[link removed]> . 50th Anniversary of Earth Day On this occasion, we reflect on how conservation is a movement that fundamentally and historically has been embraced by political conservatives. President Theodore Roosevelt established the National Park and National Wildlife Refuge Systems, and President Richard Nixon created the Environmental Protection Agency, after all. In fact, the Nixons celebrated the first Earth Day by planting a tree on the White House lawn. Read more on our blog here <[link removed]> . EarthX 2020 Moves Online Due to social distancing, EarthX events moved online this year. But what a show they put on! The event featured dozens of streaming events, including an EarthxLaw discussion regarding the importance of clean, safe water, moderated by ConservAmerica’s Brent Fewell. You can replay most of the past events by registering for free here <[link removed]> . Rural Attitudes Webinar ConservAmerica proudly co-sponsored a free webinar featuring five expert panelists weighing in on the need for policymakers to collaborate with rural citizens. They discussed how new innovations in agriculture are leading to greater sustainability and the prevailing values and attitudes in rural communities that embrace stewardship, conservation but remain skeptical of top-down command and control regulations. You should also be sure to read the accompanying op-ed on the subject written by ConservAmerica’s Brent Fewell here <[link removed]> . Paul O’Neill Tribute This past week, ConservAmerica’s President, Jeff Kupfer, authored a heartwarming tribute to former Alcoa CEO and Treasury Secretary, Paul O’Neill, with whom Jeff had the pleasure of serving at the U.S Treasury Department. Secretary O’Neill is remembered for his strong leadership values, straight talk, hard work, empathy, and commitment to working families and the safety of the workers he employed. Jeff reflected on the Secretary’s life, “Watching our leaders deal with today’s pandemic brings a renewed appreciation for the ones who have the ability to stay calm, deal with imperfect information, and build a well-functioning team that delivers results. O’Neill was such a leader.” You can read this tribute here <[link removed]> . Other Monthly News DOE Announces New Carbon Capture Funding The U.S. Department of Energy’s (DOE’s) Office of Fossil Energy announced up to $131 million for carbon capture, utilization, and storage (CCUS) projects, including up to $46 million available for cost-shared R&D projects that capture and store carbon dioxide emissions from industrial sources. CCUS is often viewed in the context of power production; however, CO2 from industrial sources is also vital. Read the press release from DOE <[link removed]> . American Climate Contract Our friends at the American Conservation Coalition (ACC) released The American Climate Contract. This proposal is the alternative to unrealistic and ineffective, progressive climate policies. It lays out a clear vision for success in the fight against climate change by focusing on four key policy areas: Energy Innovation, 21st Century Infrastructure, Natural Solutions, and Global Engagement. Land and Water Conservation Funds Allocated U.S. Secretary of the Interior David Bernhardt announced $227 million will be distributed from the Land and Water Conservation Fund (LWCF) to all 50 states for specified park and outdoor recreation and conservation projects. This represents an increase of $57 million over last year’s LWCF allocation, which is due to President Trump’s energy agenda that has resulted in an increase in revenues from qualified leases on the Outer Continental Shelf.
