The projections from our research team are alarming, John. They've identified three major factors that severely limit the ability of countries in crisis to mitigate and overcome a COVID-19 outbreak:
- Overcrowding: Social distancing is impossible in cramped refugee camps, like the Moria camp in Greece, where nearly 20,000 people occupy a space of just 0.09 square kilometers.
- Pre-existing crisis: Years of political turmoil in places like Venezuela, violence in places like Syria and civil war in places like South Sudan have shattered these countries' health systems, leaving millions without a place to turn for medical care.
- Restricted movement: Disruptions to supply chains due to the COVID-19 pandemic affect the delivery of essential resources and aid.
But, John, there is hope. IRC teams on the front lines are uniquely positioned to respond immediately to the needs of refugees and families in crisis worldwide. We've been on the ground in Venezuela since 2018, in Syria since 2012 and in South Sudan since 1989. Our response efforts and aid systems are established, flexible and swift – and the support of this community has helped make that possible.
Now, we must expand our life-changing work to help people living in the world's most fragile countries survive this pandemic. Your donation today puts that work into action.
The window of time to reverse the devastating projections shrinks every day, John. That's why your emergency support can't wait. Please, rush your gift to help us mitigate the spread of coronavirus and maintain our current programs in crisis zones worldwide. » |
