Hello Friends and Allies,
Big news on our big Low Income Fare win! As of today, eligible MBTA riders can access low income fare discounts. Thanks to the hard work of the Public Transit, Public Good campaign and all of our partners, tens of thousands of riders’ lives will be transformed for the better.
As approved by the MBTA board in March 2024, this new program is designed for riders who earn 200% or less of the federal poverty level. With this victory, working-class residents who heavily rely on the public transit system will see their monthly transit costs cut in half–or more!
On Tuesday, Governor Maura Healy announced the launch of the Low Income Fare with PTPG members and others.
CLU and our partners in the Public Transit, Public Good campaign successfully led the demand for a low income fare because affordability is essential to a strong public transit system. Without it, riders have had to sacrifice other necessities in order to afford the fare. As our recent report showed, for some people, the costs of the MBTA prevented them from buying food, medication, or paying bills–or forced them to stay home because they could not afford to ride.
Today, with the Low Income Fare program in place, the MBTA is more just, accessible and affordable. It’s time to celebrate, sign up, and share the news! More information is available at https://www.mbta.com/fares/reduced/income-eligible. Happy riding from the Public Transit, Public Good campaign!
In Solidarity,
The CLU Team
