Dear friend,

Farmers in Tanzania are getting plugged in — and it’s changing their lives
and their futures.

While more than 70 percent of urban areas have access to electricity, only
36 percent of households in rural areas are connected.

For rural communities in Tanzania, a lack of electricity means restricted
economic opportunities, inconsistent agricultural production, and limited
livelihoods. In addition, climate change has worsened the conditions for
smallholder farmers with extreme weather events such as floods and
droughts, which have a direct impact on livestock, crops, and food prices.

Mercy Corps has been working shoulder-to-shoulder with community members,
government, and businesses to improve access to sustainable and reliable
energy sources.

Energy 4 Impact, a Mercy Corps partner, has installed solar irrigation
pumps at farms in multiple regions of Tanzania that are watering entire
crops for smallholder farmers. [ [link removed] ]Learn more about how Mercy Corps is

In the Geita Region of Tanzania, solar irrigation pumps are supplying
water to farms to increase crop yields.

With this new access to electricity, farmers are able to use
electrically-powered equipment to improve their farming, sell more crops
to improve their livelihoods, and quickly recover after weather
emergencies.

Local farmers receive training from an engineer on how to operate the
solar panels and pumps, irrigation, and other mechanisms of the system.

With support from people like
you, Mercy Corps partners with many organizations to improve access to
more sustainable, climate-resilient, and equitable energy sources for
people in Tanzania and around the world. Thank you for being part of our
community.

Sincerely,

Mercy Corps
