Early fall is a great time to cast a line

Water temperatures are cooling, and early-fall is here. This is a great time to cast a line: less people, less heat and fish that are starting to get hungry and active, knowing the season is changing. And as football, hunting and other activities pick up, you have your pick of places to fish. Why not try out some new places this fall?

One of those places could be Lake Ogallala State Recreation Area (SRA) [ [link removed] ], where the trout have been growing and the bite is starting to heat up.

Find a new place and establish a new fall fishing tradition. For resources to guide your fishing adventures, visit our website.

A look at Nebraska's latest state record fish

Anglers have been out this spring and summer making some amazing catches. For example, the young man pictured here beat the former rod and reel goldfish record by more than two pounds.

Also, one avid angler made the first ever documented catch of a longear sunfish in Nebraska — making it the species' first state record.

Visit Daryl Bauer's blog for photos, details and more state record catches.

Work to begin soon on Lake Maloney angler access project

If you enjoy fishing at Lake Maloney in southwestern Nebraska, new opportunities are headed your way. Nebraska Game and Parks will begin work soon on increasing angler access along the lake inlet.

Anglers will be able to fish closer to the water’s edge after a retaining wall and concrete path are built. Also, a wooden fishing pier will be built close to the inlet.
