Settler Colonial Projects and Resistance in the United States and Palestine

Starting TONIGHT, September 3 @ 7:00 pm - 8:30 pm

DSA-LA is excited to launch our latest socialist Night School, "The Politics of Removal: Displacement from Los Angeles to Palestine," a series exploring leftist perspectives on the concept of displacement, from violent settler colonialism to the economic pressure of gentrification and the ways these forces intersect.

This series was inspired by studying the history of settler colonialism in Palestine as well as the housing in crisis in LA. While the two situations are different in obvious ways, we think there are important connections to draw. The series will cover indigenous movements in the United States, fighting rent increases in Boyle Heights, the way gentrification is weaponized to further displace Palestinians, and how the tourism industry from Airbnb to the Olympics promotes displacement, and much more.

The whole series will be held on Zoom every other week, starting on Tuesday, Sept. 3.

NINE WEEKS UNTIL ELECTION DAY! Knock Doors for our Candidates!

Karla Griego for LAUSD School Board

Karla is a parent, teacher, and activist who has been working and organizing at school sites, on picket lines, in town halls, and in the community to bring all of us together to win the schools that Los Angeles deserves. Get involved with our movement and come out and canvass with us!

Ysabel Jurado for LA City Council District 14

It’s finally here folks, the general election is in full swing. During the primary DSA-LA knocked on over 8000 doors in Eagle Rock. Thanks to our members, Ysabel Jurado was able to clinch a first place win in the primary. Now it’s time to get her over the finish line!

Jillian Burgos for LA City Council District 2

Jillian Burgos is a true grassroots socialist, serving her community as a NoHo neighborhood councilmember, housing and homelessness advocate, and essential healthcare worker. Frequently spotted on the picket lines with DSA-LA, Jillian is keenly aware of just how powerful our presence is.  As an Afro-Latina from a working-class background, Burgos was CD-2's biggest underdog, and the results of targeted canvassing blew us away in the primary. Out raised up to 12X by our opponents, she enlisted the help of volunteers in her community to knock on doors and spread hope for change in the Valley. Now, our people-powered candidate needs YOU to secure her seat at LA City Council. It's time to end the status quo politics that have plagued the valley for decades and fight for real change.

Raise the Wages, Lower the Rent: Tenant Worker Solidarity March

Saturday, September 28 @ 9:00 am - 12:00 pm

Most Angelenos are renters, and the highest regular costs that most workers face is their rent. City council will be making decisions about a lot of motions that have significant impacts on tenants and their housing, and the landlord lobby has been organized in calling for higher rents and less regulation. As tenants and workers, we need to build an organized base to advance demands for living wages, lower rents, and stronger tenant protections, so that the workers are able to live near where they work and have that we need to flourish.

Join DSA-LA, Keep LA Housed, community organizations, and labor unions to demand higher wages, stronger rent controls, and tenant protections as we build a movement for lower rents.

Last year we had 1,000 tenants and workers march in solidarity throughout Downtown Los Angeles making stops at buildings with bad housing conditions, hotel’s where workers were suffering from retaliation for going on strike and we ended at city hall where we listed our demands. Since that eventful day we have advocated for the tenant and worker demands and we are close to winning on enhancing the Tenant Anti Harassment Ordinance, improving the Los Angeles Rent Stabilization Ordinance to get lower rents, and we are fighting to increase the minimum wage for all workers in the tourism industry. We are also setting the ground to win on new housing models like social housing.
