For the first time in 25 years, children in Gaza are facing a resurgence of poliovirus.
Doctors Without Borders/Médecins Sans Frontières (MSF) is working alongside the Ministry of Health and United Nations to provide logistical and organizational support for an ongoing large-scale polio vaccination campaign in five health facilities across central and southern Gaza. The campaign aims to vaccinate approximately 640,000 children under age 10. MSF teams will support coordinating spaces to store cold chain equipment—crucial to maintaining vaccine potency—in a primary health care center serving as the distribution point for vaccination centers. Our health promoters are also working to inform the community about the campaign and direct families to the nearest vaccination centers.
Polio is highly contagious and threatens to devastate an already vulnerable population. Its resurgence is a consequence of the destruction of Gaza’s health system and infrastructure and the appalling living conditions people have been forced into. Around the world, our teams are seeing what happens when health care systems are destroyed: It can lead to worsening, or even new, emergencies.
Your support allows our teams to respond to multiple, and often compounding, emergencies like these, in Gaza, Sudan, Haiti, and across the world. Rush your gift today, and it will be put right to work providing care to patients around the globe.
