I thought I knew what I was getting into when I announced my campaign last year. I had run for Congress already and spent a decade serving in the House.

I had an idea of what this would be like, but I’ve got to tell you: nothing prepared me for the pace we’ve been going over the last few months.

It seems like every day there’s a new attack ad with millions of dollars behind it. Kari Lake spends all of her time tearing me down online and in far-right media. Trump himself has attacked me, personally, and set the MAGA-right on me. It’s a lot.

My friends ask me why I’d put myself through all of that. But to me, it’s simple.

My immigrant mother raised me and my three sisters on a secretary’s salary. I slept on the floor growing up, and now I am here. I am in a position to give back to the country that has done so much for me.

How could I not?
