The back-to-school season should be an exciting time, John.
But there’s a truth we need to be brutally honest about: Going back to school means opening ourselves up to danger and fear, too.
Every time we walk into school, or send a loved one to school, a part of us worries.
It feels awful to say, John – we don’t like to talk about it, but the fear is there. And as educators, we have no escape from the threat of gun violence at school or nearby. We learn to be vigilant. We are taught to be prepared.
And “leaders” keep telling us we have to live like this. But it’s not true. We refuse to let it be.
