Last week, in one of the summer's biggest actions, dozens of elders (and their young friends) shut down Citi to demand justice for (y)our grandchildren. This morning, Summer of Heat activists returned to Citi, this time on Citi-bikes! Eleven more folks were arrested blocking the doors, bringing the total list of folks arrested protesting this Summer to 650. Citi sponsors the bike share program in New York City so they can put their name and logo all over town and claim to be supporting climate solutions.
Don't get us wrong, we love bikes. And the transportation sector — namely all the cars and trucks driving us around to get to work and school and whatnot — is this country's leading source of climate change pollution. But for Citi to invest (a relatively modest) amount of money so some workers in New York City (where they just happen to have their corporate Headquarters) can bike to work, and claim to be a ‘green’ corporation, while also being the world's biggest funder of fossil fuel expansion is just straight up greenwashing.
So activists brought decorated Citi Bikes to Citi’s doorstep this morning and blockaded their office to demand they stop funding new fossil fuels. You can see more photos and video of the action in our blog.
Share the news, join us in the streets one last time (for now) and stay tuned! We'll be back sooner than Citi expects with more beautiful and artistic actions.
Thanks,
