U.S. public policy benefits when even a handful of serious progressives make it into Congress. With a large number of them, Congress could radically transform itself and restrain the imperial presidency.
Here’s one we all need to get behind across the country. Arati Kreibich is challenging Josh Gottheimer in New Jersey’s Fifth District primary.
Kreibich supports passing H.Res. 109 (AOC’s bill for a Green New Deal), creating Medicare for All, banning private prisons, restoring voting rights to the incarcerated, ending the war on drugs, ending the prosecution of children as adults, amending the Constitution to overturn Citizen’s United, granting D.C. statehood, making public colleges tuition free, raising taxes on the 1%, breaking up big banks, requiring paid parental leave, banning assault weapons, setting the minimum wage at $15, banning right-to-work laws, and much more.

And Kreibich is not fooling around. This is someone who’s gotten things done in local government, and whose seriousness is evident from the fact that she has the nerve to go after the place where all the money is. She proposes to “put a stop to the endless wars and turn the focus of the international community to building peace and fighting climate change.” Kreibich proposes to redirect military spending to human needs, going so far as to suggest that the latter should be be funded more than militarism.

An added benefit of electing Arati would be removing Josh Gottheimer. This Wall Street-funded, regulation-slashing Congressman voted with Trump the majority of the time in his first two years in Congress. The anti-union, anti-environment U.S. Chamber of Commerce has awarded Gottheimer its Spirit of Enterprise Award.
Gottheimer “has deep ties to the lobbies for Saudi Arabia and Israel,” The Intercept’s Ryan Grim reported. He’s backed the U.S.-Saudi war on Yemen and predatory banking practices, while maneuvering to undermine efforts by progressive Democrats in the House.
