A MESSAGE FROM ACTING ASSISTANT ATTORNEY GENERAL
BRENT J. COHEN

OJP is in the midst of the busiest time of an already very busy year. In the weeks ahead, we will be awarding thousands of grants to communities across the country to: help improve community safety, support victims of crime, protect America's youth and create new opportunities for them, advance science and promote equal justice. We're excited about these new investments and look forward to continuing our work to create safe and just communities.

This month, we also celebrate an important milestone. September 7 marks the 50th anniversary of the Juvenile Justice and Delinquency Prevention Act, which, among other things, created our Office of Juvenile Justice and Delinquency Prevention. That landmark piece of legislation also established core requirements for protecting youth in the juvenile justice system and set our nation on a course for better treatment of justice-involved youth across America, a mission that continues through the work of OJJDP.

This issue of Justice Programs News & Funding includes more funding opportunities, a healthy line-up of events and activities, and a number of new publications, as well as a video highlighting the impact of OJP's Community Violence Intervention and Prevention Initiative.

As always, we welcome your feedback and appreciate your interest in the work
of OJP.

*Brent J. Cohen
*Acting Assistant Attorney General
