John,
More than $2 trillion.
That’s how much Congress has already authorized to be spent on the coronavirus stimulus and response, and we can only expect that number to grow in the coming weeks.
We should not have to wonder if the money is going where it is needed.
We should not have to wonder if President Trump and Jared Kushner will profit.
We should not have to wonder if donors are getting more stimulus money with their influence.
With so much taxpayer money being spent on urgent economic and public health measures, accountability and oversight have never been more important. However, President Trump has been waging a war on accountability since the start of his administration, and he has already attacked the oversight measures in the CARES Act.
That’s why your members of Congress need to hear from you now. Congress will likely consider further stimulus and pandemic response measures soon, and when they do, they must include strong oversight and accountability measures that can withstand the Trump administration’s attacks. Email your members of Congress now and ask them to support protections for watchdogs and whistleblowers, prevent profiteering by the Trump family, and more.
We’ve already seen reports of companies connected to the Trump administration getting large contracts or receiving unusually large small-business loans. With a shadow task force led by Jared Kushner that has failed to disclose its members’ conflicts of interest and used private emails, we’ve already seen that the Trump White House would prefer to operate in secrecy and without accountability.
With thousands of lives and trillions of taxpayer dollars at stake, that’s absolutely unacceptable. Congress needs to ensure that future stimulus measures include robust accountability and oversight measures, and pressure from constituents is crucial to getting them to act. Contact your members of Congress now and tell them: accountability is essential!
Thank you for standing up for accountability,
Noah Bookbinder
