It’s Hunger Action Month!

It’s National Hunger Action Month and we have plenty of ways for you to get involved! Join us for our 9/11 Week of Service - an opportunity to commemorate September 11th by helping your neighbors.

In addition to the great service opportunities available, we’ll also be hosting an illuminating discussion with Dr. Priya Fielding-Singh about her book, “How the Other Half Eats.”

Fighting for Universal School Meals

Last week, Hunger Free America CEO Joel Berg joined US Senator Kirsten Gillibrand and Assembly Member Jessica González-Rojas in support of the Universal School Meals Program Act. This bill would make school breakfasts and lunches free for all children throughout the country.

Answering the Call

The Fort Hall Reservation Summer Recreation Program in Idaho provides children on the Reservation with activities, sports, crafts, hikes, language and culture. The program also provides breakfast, lunch, and a snack for the kids.

When the program reached out to say that they had no food for the kids, our
National Community Organizing Manager Dawn Pierce sprung into action to secure the needed food. Thanks to Chobani and the Idaho Foodbank, as well as Dairy West who provided a commercial fridge/freezer, 150 kids will be receiving Chobani yogurt, CLIF Bars and fruit 5 days a week for the summer!

And check out Dawn’s interview on Vital Idaho with host Beth Markley! Recorded at KRBX Radio on August 22nd.

Benefits Access Spotlight

Throughout the year, HFA staff members head out into communities to spread the word about SNAP and WIC, and to connect people to much needed food benefits. Our team works tirelessly to ensure that everyone has access to abundant, nutritious food.

Advocacy Corner: Fight for SNAP

Earlier this year, the House Agriculture Committee advanced a Farm Bill proposal that would, according to the Congressional Budget Office, take away $30 billion in SNAP funding. Hunger Free America fiercely opposes this proposal, which would take away life-saving nutrition assistance from tens of millions of food insecure children, working people, veterans, people with disabilities, and older Americans.

We urge you to contact your House Representative and US Senator and implore them to reject any Farm Bill that cuts SNAP funding!
