National Preparedness Month is HERE!

And the 2024 Theme is: “Start a Conversation”

September is National Preparedness Month, a time when we all come together to ensure that our communities, workplaces, and homes are ready for emergencies. The STOP THE BLEED® campaign believes that preparedness is not just about stocking up on supplies—it's about empowering individuals with the skills they need to save lives.

Uncontrolled bleeding is the leading cause of

preventable death from trauma.

It only takes an average of 3-5 minutes for a person to bleed out, yet it takes an average of 7-10 minutes for first responders to arrive on the scene.

This means it is crucial to make sure people are prepared to step in and save a life if they encounter a life-threatening bleed.

Emergencies can happen in the blink of an eye, are you and your loved ones prepared?

“Talking about bad things that could happen like a disaster or emergency isn’t always easy. We may think we’re protecting the people we love by avoiding these conversations, but they are important to start taking steps to get ready and stay safe.” (Ready.gov)

This month, we encourage you to have a conversation with your friends, family, or members of your community about preparedness.

Specifically, are you and your loved ones STOP THE BLEED® trained?

After a conversation, it’s important to take action!

STOP THE BLEED® Equipment ([link removed])

We only offer military grade Department of Defense approved STOP THE BLEED® Kits.

Why?

In the event of a bleeding emergency, you want to know that you have equipment that will work. There is cheaper equipment in the marketplace, but if you want to have confidence that the equipment you purchase will work when someone’s life is at stake, make sure it carries the STOP THE BLEED® mark. If it doesn’t say STOP THE BLEED®, it might not work when the time comes.

In honor of National Preparedness Month, the Coalition has many exciting launches happening this September that will help better prepare you and your community! Stay tuned!

** Instructor Spotlight

Denise Harris RN

Michigan

Healing Hearts Safety Services

As a Registered Nurse (RN), CPR Instructor, Active Violence Emergency Response Trainer, and Prevention Coordinator, I have dedicated my career to saving lives and preventing tragedies. My journey into this vital field was deeply personal and profoundly motivated by the harrowing experience of losing my brother, who was shot and paralyzed, ultimately succumbing to related complications. This personal loss ignited a passion within me to prevent others from experiencing similar pain. As the president of a non-profit organization supporting children who have lost loved ones to violence, I have seen firsthand the devastating impact of such events on families and communities. Becoming a STOP THE BLEED® Instructor was a natural extension of my commitment to emergency response and violence prevention. This initiative empowers individuals with the skills and knowledge to act swiftly in crisis situations, potentially saving countless lives. By teaching these critical techniques, I hope to honor my
brother’s memory and contribute to a safer, more prepared community.

Training is at the heart of the STOP THE BLEED® campaign and STOP THE BLEED® Instructors are the ones that make the heart beat! The Instructor Spotlight shines a bright light on individuals engaging their communities about STOP THE BLEED®.

I am passionate about STOP THE BLEED® because I have been previously certified and truly appreciate the importance of individuals understanding the importance of this training to community safety. Specifically with growing up in low income communities and now attending the largest HBCU in the world, I believe that STOP THE BLEED® training in my area would be an extremely vital tool in lewd of very large events.
