Term of the Month — Forensic Science Service Providers [ [link removed] ]

Forensic science service providers are integral to a functioning criminal justice system. They provide essential services related to crime scene investigation, laboratory analysis, expert testimony, consulting, and research and development. The community of forensic science service providers is diverse and includes public crime laboratories and forensic units, medical examiner and coroner offices, private labs, academics, and consultants.

Forensic science service providers today face challenges with increasing backlogs, a changing workforce, the adoption of new technology, and a need for standardization across jurisdictions. These issues impact case closure rates and the strength of a prosecution or defense. To address these needs, NIJ has made investments of over $300 million in funding toward forensic science research, development, and evaluation since 2009. In addition, NIJ supports the Forensic Technology Center of Excellence [ [link removed] ], which is dedicated to transitioning new technologies into laboratories and disseminating best practices to improve justice-related outcomes. Other efforts implemented toward improvement in the field include:

* The Police Crime Lab Accreditation Initiative [ [link removed] ]

* The American Society of Crime Laboratory Directors Accreditation Initiative [ [link removed] ]

* A report to congress on the "Needs Assessment of Forensic Laboratories and Medical Examiner/Coroner Offices" [ [link removed] ]
