Did you see my email the other day where I asked for your support in encouraging the FCC to take action and adopt the proposed measures in a rulemaking they’re considering? Well, if you haven’t yet and want to support this effort, submit a comment today (comments need to be received by September 4) through the FCC’s online electronic comment filling system!
Reminder: If you want more detailed instructions on how to submit your comment, check out instructions we put together on how to do so.
John,
Would you believe me if I told you that President Joe Biden called voters1 and discouraged them from voting?
Well, thanks to a lack of regulatory oversight of the use of artificial intelligence (AI) in elections, the above scenario is not only very possible, but it has actually happened.
The worst part? Scams such as this one will continue to happen and we need the government to protect voters. Thankfully, at least one government agency, the Federal Communications Commission (FCC) is currently seeking public comment about a proposed rulemaking2 that would require disclosures for AI-generated content used in radio and television political ads.
Issue One has submitted our comment in support of the rulemaking, but we need your help in encouraging the FCC to take action and adopt the proposed measures to ensure that Americans can easily spot what’s real and what’s fake, and that the integrity of our democratic processes remains intact. This is a pivotal moment that could shape the influence AI has on our elections, information environment, and our democracy.
Your voice is crucial. If you’d like to show your support for the proposed rulemaking, you can submit a public comment using the FCC’s online electronic comment filling system – be sure to do so by September 4! In addition, if you want more detailed instructions on how to submit your comment, check out instructions we put together on how to do so.
We hope that you’ll join us and demand that the FCC take the potential risks AI poses to our elections and democracy seriously.
Thanks for all you do,
Dr. Carah Ong Whaley Director of Election Protection, Issue One
