John,
First, thank you for voting in last month’s primary election [[link removed]] ! Abortion rights now have one additional champion in the Kansas Legislature, Representative-Elect Wanda Brownlee Paige, D-Kansas City , who has no general election opponent.
[[link removed]] Now we turn to the general election, where the stakes couldn’t be higher for Kansas. Currently, an anti-abortion supermajority [[link removed]] prevents Governor Kelly’s vetoes of terrible policy from taking effect. That supermajority is not only electorally vulnerable-it’s also undemocratic. This year, 66 Kansas legislators [[link removed]] voted against the will of their district on abortion rights.
If these politicians are allowed to hold onto veto-proof power, the consequences will be severe. Senator Minority Leader Dinah Sykes predicts [[link removed]] that “next year they will be more emboldened,” saying “They want to ban abortion and take away women’s rights. I think the majority of people who are bringing these [anti-abortion] bills want to eliminate contraception.”
The good news: We write our own future, and we will keep fighting for freedom. We know we’re equal to the challenge of breaking the undemocratic, anti-abortion chokehold on our state legislature. We’ve turned the tables before, and we’ll do it again .
As we prepare for November, check to see who represents you [[link removed]] and whether they’re one of the 66 [[link removed]] legislators out of step with their district. Make sure your voter registration [[link removed]] is up to date. And remind your community to vote all the way down the ballot !
