The other week, Donald Trump spoke in Detroit at the National Guard Conference. It should have been an opportunity to bring people together, or offer a vision for our country and our role in the world.
Instead, he spent his time in Michigan airing personal grievances, painting a dark picture of our country and its people, and, (for some reason) talking about Missouri.
And where he did touch on our national security or our place in the world, it was a vision for an America in retreat, rather than the world’s leading democracy. He would let Putin do whatever he wanted in Ukraine and abandon our NATO allies in the face of Russian aggression.
This won’t be the last time we see Donald Trump here in Michigan — In fact, in a recent 9 day stretch, he made his 7th, 8th, and 9th visits to the state, with JD Vance also making his 4th trip to Michigan since becoming the vice presidential candidate. They won't be their last. Far from it.
Because Trump, Vance, and Republicans know what we know: If Trump loses Michigan, he will almost certainly lose the White House — and Republicans will lose the Senate. And the better I do in my race, the better Kamala Harris likely does in the state as well.
Trump’s visits could not be a more obvious sign that Republicans are gearing up to throw everything they can at Michigan, and that Michigan Democrats can’t take anything for granted.
For as good as the vibes have been lately, Michigan is a swing state – full stop. The latest polls show our state is virtually tied — for both the presidential and the Senate race. And political forecasters have said Michigan is a pure toss up.
The only thing we know for certain is that this race will come down to the wire and could go either way on Election Day.
Because just as we have swung toward Democrats, Michigan is known for swinging right back.
We can't let that happen. Want to help? Chip in what you can and help send a message that Michigan is sure as hell not ready to swing back to Trump.
