There appears to be no immediate end in sight to the financial pain households and businesses are facing right now with latest ABS data confirming the Albanese Government has failed to tame inflation.
In an effort to control what it has consistently identified as home grown inflation the Reserve Bank has had its foot on the brake. In contrast, the Albanese Government continues to press the accelerator and not only destroy Australia’s enviable standard of living but fuel a crisis in the cost of doing business. In recent months, the Business Council of Australia has highlighted record insolvencies as a result of rising home-grown inflation.
At a time when fiscal discipline should be the focus of our discussions in Parliament House, it’s disappointing that instead we’ve had a constant stream of bizarre rants, broken promises, and personal attacks on the Leader of the Opposition led by the Prime Minister, the Treasurer and the Home Affairs Minister.
Understandably Australians in general, and those in business, are placing significant pressure on the Albanese Government about high immigration and insufficient housing to meet current demand. In response, the Albanese Government has chosen to cap foreign student intake seemingly without considering the implications, not least of which is the significant loss in revenue to universities.
The Australian Border Force’s latest Operation Sovereign Borders report marks a grim milestone for the Albanese Labor Government. Since the 2022 election, the boats have been coming, dropping their passengers on Australian soil, and departing undetected – something virtually unheard of under the previous Coalition Government.
On a more positive note, I spoke in Parliament about the need to grow our Science, Technology, Engineering and Mathematics (STEM) workforce. As the Inaugural co-chair of the Parliamentary Friends of Science, I was delighted to see the space industry showcased with a very large group of not only space enthusiasts but organisations, companies and businesses from across Australia that are doing some fantastic work in this industry.
I had the opportunity to speak about gender based violence and the 31 women who died between 1 January and 31 May this year. At around the same time, the United Nations released statistics which were a sobering reminder that we must continue to raise awareness and highlight the impact of gender-based violence.
I was also privileged to speak in Parliament about the significance of Vietnam Veterans' Day and thank the Burleigh Heads RSL Sub Branch for its wonderful service. Congratulations also to the Currumbin Palm Beach RSL Sub-Branch for its support to veterans and on receiving further funding from the Building Excellence in Support and Training program.
During the month I attended the launch of the Australian Haemochromatosis Registry and the relaunch of MyHeart MyLife’s free 12-week program designed for adults living with heart disease or caring for someone who is.
It was also a pleasure to host Taiwanese Legislators and representatives of the Taiwanese Economic and Cultural Office to discuss matters of importance to Australia and Taiwan.
