** Monday Nature Mystery

We are pleased to announce the winner of our most recent Monday Nature Mystery, Stephanie StClaire! (Please email your snail mail address and preference for a hat or tote bag to [email protected] (mailto:[email protected]?subject=Monday%20Nature%20Mystery%20Winner) )

Congratulations to Stephanie for identifying this juvenile Green Heron (Butorides virescens). According to All About Birds ([link removed]) , Green Herons are common and widespread, but they can be hard to see at first. Whereas larger herons tend to stand prominently in open parts of wetlands, Green Herons tend to be at the edges, in shallow water, or concealed in vegetation. Visit a wetland and carefully scan the banks looking for a small, hunch-backed bird with a long, straight bill staring intently at the water. Their harsh “skeow” call is also a good clue. Green Herons also are distinctive in flight: the slow beats of their rounded wings can make them look a bit like tailless crows.
