Parental Choice Has an Exciting New Opportunity
Online Christian Education Never Sounded So Good!
Earlier this year a Waukesha County judge said it was illegal to block private schools from offering online courses that count towards hours and credits. This ruling forced the Department of Public Instruction to change its policy. So what this means is Wisconsin parents now have yet another option for how they educate their children—they can do so virtually at home using programs provided by private schools—including private schools that take voucher students. Finally the playing field has been a bit leveled.
Academy of Excellence, a private Christian school in Milwaukee and the second largest private school in the state accepting voucher students, recently announced they are offering, beginning next fall, a virtual program, which will be available to families statewide, including those who qualify for the state vouchers."
Read more about this opportunity HERE. The deadline to apply for a voucher to attend a private school is Thursday, May 14.
"Combining the voucher program with this virtual learning opportunity is going to give parents across the state a wonderful educational option for their children," says Julaine Appling, WFA president. "Many families live in rural areas with no Christian school readily available."
Listen to Julaine discuss Wisconsin's educational opportunities on this week's Wisconsin Family Connection HERE.
Application information is available HERE.

NATIONAL DAY OF PRAYER
Thursday, May 7, 2020
Habakkuk 2:14
Because of the faith of many of our founding fathers, public prayer and national days of prayer have a long-standing and significant history in American tradition.
The National Day of Prayer is a vital part of our heritage. Since the first call to prayer in 1775, when the Continental Congress asked the colonies to pray for wisdom in forming a nation, the call to prayer has continued through our history, including President Lincoln’s proclamation of a day of “humiliation, fasting, and prayer” in 1863. In 1952, a joint resolution by Congress, signed by President Truman, declared an annual national day of prayer. In 1988, the law was amended and signed by President Reagan, permanently setting the day as the first Thursday of every May.
Here in Wisconsin, National Day of Prayer-Madison will be hosting a ZOOM prayer meeting from noon to 1 p.m. on Thursday, May 7, 2020 and encourages families to participate in a "drive by" prayer time by driving to their local schools, businesses, government offices, etc., at a time that is convenient for them that day.

US Attorney General Defends Religious Liberty
U.S. Attorney General William Barr (photo left) issued a memorandum Monday directing the Department of Justice to be on the lookout for state and local actions that violate the rights of the American people under the guise of COVID-19 emergency measures and to intervene if necessary. “Even in times of emergency…the First Amendment and federal statutory law prohibit discrimination against religious institutions and religious believers,” Barr wrote, adding that “the Constitution also forbids in certain circumstances…undue interference with the national economy.” Read more HERE.
Julaine Appling, WFA president, states, "Having a US Attorney General who understands and supports the Constitution and the rule of law is always important, but never more so than in times of national crisis. Attorney General Barr is showing appropriate leadership in this directive. Fundamental rights such as religious freedom must be vigorously defended even in emergencies. Freedoms yielded are very difficult to regain."

When SCOTUS "Got It Wrong"
During a recent Supreme Court ruling, Justice Clarence Thomas referred to Roe v. Wade as one of many “incorrect decisions” in relation to the Fourteenth Amendment. In the same context, Thomas also mentioned the 2015 Obergefell ruling that guaranteed a “right” to homosexual “marriage,” and the Dred Scott case which said the Constitution didn’t allow for black people to be citizens. In the same recent decision Justice Brett Kavanaugh also addressed what he called “erroneous precedents,” mentioning in particular Planned Parenthood v. Casey, which reaffirmed Roe v. Wade.
Judicial precedence is an important part of what judges use to make decisions. But as Justices Thomas and Kavanaugh note, if care isn’t taken, bad precedence continues indefinitely and often gets worse. Good justices, like these two, will take steps to right the wrong. Overturning bad judicial decisions or precedence is exactly what we need when it comes to abortion and marriage.
