Cutting Social Security’s dedicated funding is an election-year trap for Democrats.

John,

Rent is due tomorrow. At least 30 million people have lost their jobs in the pandemic. And instead of any additional aid to people who need help now, Trump announced this week that he thinks one-time $1,200 payments are enough to get us through a months-long public health shutdown. Trump came right out and opposed any further direct help for families and individuals.

Instead, he’s proposing to defund Social Security’s dedicated funding. Trump wants us to stop paying into Social Security, claiming that will solve our economic woes.

Congress has already gone back for a second helping of corporate bailouts―but any more money for the people who are suffering is apparently off the table to him.

Stopping Social Security contributions would be another handout to corporations who would stop paying in on behalf of all of their employees―without passing that savings on. And those who are out of work won’t see anything.

Donald Trump is obsessed with undermining and destroying Social Security. We’re fighting back! Instead of cutting Social Security at this urgent time of need, we’re working with our champions in Congress to expand our earned benefits! Pitch in $7 or more to fight Donald Trump’s war against Social Security.

We can’t allow Trump and congressional Republicans to use the pandemic to defund and destroy our Social Security system!

Thank you,

Michael Phelan

--MORE INFO ON TRUMP'S PROPOSAL TO DEFUND SOCIAL SECURITY--

John,

Yesterday, Donald Trump announced that he opposes further cash payments to individuals. Instead, he wants to defund our Social Security system by cutting its dedicated revenue.

Congress continues to give trillions of dollars in bailouts to corporations and wealthy business owners―but Trump apparently believes $1,200 is enough for seniors and working people.

While Donald Trump tries to defund and destroy our Social Security system, we’re fighting for a pandemic response that puts people first! Chip in $7 to protect seniors and people with disabilities from Republicans!

30 million people have lost their jobs in the last month. Cutting payroll contributions, Social Security’s dedicated revenue, will do nothing for them. Nor will it do anything for workers whose hours have been cut, or workers who rely on tips but don’t have any customers.

The GOP scheme isn’t about helping people who need help. It’s just another example of Trump and Mitch McConnell seizing the crisis as an excuse to achieve long-term goals of Wall Street―destroying the postal service and defunding Social Security. We won’t let them get away with it.

From the first moment Trump proposed his “payroll tax cut,” Social Security Works has been clear: This is an attack on our Social Security system, not something that will help people who are suffering during the pandemic. Here’s why:

This cut―which he calls the ‘payroll tax cut’―leaves out tipped workers, employees who lose shifts because of the economic slowdown, or people who lose their jobs entirely. Cutting Social Security contributions by definition only helps people who still have a regular paycheck.

Eliminating Social Security’s dedicated funding doesn’t do enough, even for the people who are paying in. Because Social Security is funded by a percentage of payroll, the lowest-income people pay in the least―meaning that the largest benefits from Trump’s scheme will accrue to high-wage workers and corporations, and it barely does anything for low-wage workers who have stayed employed.

Trump has admitted that his goal is to defund Social Security permanently, even without the pandemic.[1] The only reason to support this policy over better targeted, more efficient measures is if your true goal is to undermine Social Security.

Cutting Social Security’s dedicated funding is an election-year trap for Democrats. If Trump wins re-election, he has already indicated that he will seek to make the cut permanent.[2] And if Democrats restore Social Security’s dedicated funding, Republicans will say that their first act is increasing taxes by 12%.

We won’t stop defending our Social Security system, and fighting for our government to put people first, not corporate bailouts! Chip in $7 to fight back!

Thank you,

Alex Lawson
