A Message from Congresswoman Sherrill

Rep. Sherrill visits union workers at Hudson River Tunnel construction site

Dear Friends,

For many of us, Labor Day is a day off of work to celebrate the end of summer, spend time with family, and prepare for back-to-school.

As the proud granddaughter of a United Auto Workers member, I believe it is important that we take time to recognize the generations of union workers who fought for Labor Day and continue to support middle class families and fight for fair wages and working conditions today.

New Jersey has a storied history of supporting our unions, and was one of the first states to pass a law making Labor Day an officially recognized holiday in 1887. If you’re a history buff like me, click here to learn more about the history of Labor Day!

In Congress, I am focused on ensuring that our labor unions have the support they need to bring good-paying jobs to the Garden State and protect New Jersey workers. Continue reading to learn more about my work to support our unions, lower costs, and fight for New Jersey families.

Sincerely,

Expanding Workforce Training and Labor Representation Opportunities

Sherrill visits Carpenters Union training Site

High-quality workforce training programs help New Jerseyans get good paying jobs and allow businesses to meet their workforce needs. That’s why I am working to expand gold-standard registered apprenticeship programs and ensure that, as we do so, labor unions have a say in how apprenticeship funding is allocated. In fact, one of the very first bills I introduced this Congress would do just that.

Additionally, I am working to expand workforce training and educational opportunities to our veterans. Our veterans are an incredibly talented part of our workforce, but too often are overlooked. That’s why I am continuing to fight for my bipartisan legislation that would provide veterans with apprenticeship and educational opportunities while connecting businesses with service members who are transitioning to civilian life.

Thanks to Union Advocacy, We’re Providing Incentives to Companies to Raise Wages

Sherrill and ATU give a Union Yes!

I was proud to fight to pass the Bipartisan Infrastructure Law, CHIPS and Science Act, and Inflation Reduction Act – three landmark pieces of legislation that are helping lower costs for families, strengthen our supply chains, protect our planet, and grow our economy. Thanks to the tireless advocacy of our labor unions, all three of these laws include incentives for companies to pay their workers fairly.

Protecting Pensions and Retirement Benefits for First Responders

Sherrill joins first responders unions at Belleville Fire Station

Americans pay into Social Security and pensions throughout their working lives and I’m committed to ensuring that every American is able to access all of the retirement benefits they have earned. Last year, I hosted a roundtable discussion with local police officers, firefighters, retirees, and representatives from New Jersey’s public safety unions to discuss my advocacy to repeal the Windfall Elimination Provision, which is making it harder for many of our retired first responders to receive all of their retirement benefits. I am continuing to work to ensure all of our first responders can access the benefits they are owed.

Additionally, I fought to secure federal funding in the American Rescue Plan to protect the retirement benefits of nearly three million working American families with multi-employer pension plans.

Ensuring Every American Worker Can Join a Union

Sherrill welcomes CWA representatives to Washington

In New Jersey, unions are protecting workers’ rights and creating success for middle-class families. Unfortunately, that isn’t the case all across the country. I am proud to support the landmark Protecting the Right to Organize Act to ensure that every American can organize without fear of retaliation, engage in collective bargaining, and reap the benefits of union membership.
