John,
The United States Supreme Court is facing a legitimacy crisis.
It seems like there are constant news stories of the Justices’ blatant biases and ethical violations. Some of sitting justices have reportedly accepted lavish and unreported gifts amounting to millions of dollars — from parties with interests before the court! The Supreme Court justices' acceptance of gifts, failures to recuse, and excessive partisanship have eroded the people's trust in the highest court in the country — only 16% of Americans report "a great deal of confidence" in the Supreme Court. We need to take action now.
President Biden agrees: that's why he's called on Congress to immediately pass comprehensive reforms for the Supreme Court. But he can't get this done alone. We need to contact our Senators and Representatives and let them know that we support Biden's critical Supreme Court reforms package.
Click here to send a message to your Members of Congress and urge them to pass Biden's Supreme Court reforms now.
President Biden's reforms package would be a critical first step towards enforcing ethical standards and restoring the public’s confidence in the Supreme Court. No one is above the law — Supreme Court justices should be held to the same standards as all other federal officials.
President Biden is calling for two essential Supreme Court reforms that Congress should pass immediately:
-
A binding, enforceable Code of Ethics for the Supreme Court, that would address disclosure of gifts, refraining from public political activity, and recusal from cases in which a justice or their spouse has a financial or other conflict of interest; and
-
Term limits for Supreme Court justices; specifically, a system in which the President would appoint a Justice every two years to serve eighteen years in active service on the Court, followed by lifetime status as Senior Justice, able to fill in temporary vacancies or to serve in lower appellate courts as needed.

Thank you,
Democratic Values
