Before the COVID-19 crisis, our campaign had nearly 70 in-person grassroots fundraising events planned across the city.

Now, our campaign has shifted to addressing the crisis: Advocating for an Essential Workers Bill of Rights, organizing informative Zoom calls to help thousands of freelancers access unemployment and helping hundreds of advocates plug in to campaigns for justice from home, and much, much more.

The activities have changed -- but the costs of running a citywide race in NYC haven’t gone away. And because we can’t hold those in-person events, we’re facing a shortfall of close to $30,000 ahead of our end-of-month deadline.

Some candidates can keep calling their wealthy donors during the pandemic, but we’re running a different campaign -- one based on connecting with thousands of New Yorkers who share our vision of a more equitable city and asking them to give what they can.

This campaign has always been about planning for the future, and putting the long-term public good over short-term profit.

That’s why I’m working with my Council colleagues to pass an NYC Essential Workers Bill of Rights. We must go beyond nightly cheering and banging pots and pans. Our frontline workers deserve the basic dignity of fair pay, sick leave, protections from unfair firings.

The response from our city’s most powerful lobbyists has been predictable, but still maddening. They have already issued alarmist press releases and are actively working to weaken or defeat the legislation. Right now, I’m especially proud to be the only candidate for NYC Comptroller refusing money from the real estate industry and corporate PACs. Even as our situation changes, our core values will not.
