Facing these adverse climate events led her to dedicate herself to working at the Refugee Coalition for Climate Action (RCCA). At RCCA, Jeanne leads a young team in planting trees, conducting cleanup campaigns, and educating the community on the harsh realities of climate change. "We teach young people about climate change and how it affects everything—from agriculture and food security to air pollution and drought," Jeanne explains. "Climate change doesn't choose who to attack. It affects everyone," she reflects. "Climate change can force anyone to be displaced at any time." Despite the trauma, Jeanne’s resilience shines through as she manages to laugh occasionally, while recounting these stories. "I laugh because I have overcome these situations – I'm still here," she says. "But it’s not a happy laugh—it’s just the way to cope." Asked about what she wants to do next, she tells me about her dream to build a strong, global coalition of climate activists who are dedicated to real solutions. “I want to contribute to policymaking that benefits communities like ours”, she says. Her tone shifts to become sharper as she urges global leaders to act, "We meet every year at summits, but there's still no solution. We are running out of time. Let’s do more!" Jeanne embodies the spirit of a generation building a future amidst the reality of the climate crisis. "This is about our survival," she says."Our world needs you, me, and everyone to act NOW!” |
