Happy Labor Day! I hope that you are enjoying the day, but today is about more than just a day off. Today symbolizes the hard-fought, hard-earned victories for American labor unions and American workers — rights that we should never take for granted.
I hope you’ll join me in taking a moment to honor the workers who keep our Commonwealth running and the labor movement that has shaped our country into what it is today. If it were not for the labor movement, many of the things that are commonplace today would not be here: a minimum wage, work safety requirements, reasonable hours, and so much more.
As Speaker of the Pennsylvania State House, I am committed to continuing the fight to preserve and expand the rights of organized labor and protect our workers! Under my leadership, the State House passed legislation to raise the minimum wage for the first time since 2009 and extend OSHA to Pennsylvania’s public sector workers.
And while these are critical steps in the right direction, there’s still so much more to do to support workers and their families. We must come together to rally around, support, and protect Pennsylvania’s workers — and that’s exactly what I’m doing as Speaker of the State House.
Joanna McClinton serves as the Speaker of the Pennsylvania State House, while proudly serving the 191st district.
Joanna has made important strides to enact progress in the Pennsylvania Legislature. From working to protect the rights of those accused in our criminal justice system to spearheading the fight to expand our voting rights, she has proven that she will always prioritize the prosperity of Pennsylvanians over the promise of power.
