John,
The Supreme Court has spent this year alternating between issuing unpopular, undemocratic rulings and dodging credible accusations of blatant corruption.
Over the past few years, the Supreme Court has issued a series of rulings that were like a Republican wishlist. More guns, abortion bans, state-mandated prayer, a gutted Clean Air Act, less police accountability, and more gerrymandered congressional districts. It’s been bad!
The Supreme Court is giving Republican politicians everything that they wanted, which they could never accomplish through the democratic branches of government. John, they’re trying to repeal the whole 20th century.
Eventually, they’re going to come for our Social Security system.
Since George W. Bush failed to privatize Social Security, Republicans have pushed to hide cuts behind an unelected body with superpowers. Whether it was a federal commission like Bowles-Simpson, a secret fast-tracked group of politicians like the Supercommittee, or a legislative vehicle like Mitt Romney’s TRUST Act, this approach gives politicians plausible deniability while still achieving the same goals: Dismantling our Social Security system.
We need to rein in these unelected judges. That starts by ending their lifetime appointments, so that our democracy doesn’t hinge on when elderly justices die. Sign now to enact term limits on the Supreme Court!
When a similarly out-of-step right-wing Supreme Court threatened Social Security in the 1930s, President Franklin Roosevelt clearly challenged them. He said:
There is no basis for the claim made by some members of the Court that something in the Constitution has compelled them regretfully to thwart the will of the people. We have, therefore, reached the point as a nation where we must take action to save the Constitution from the Court and the Court from itself.
The right-wing captured Supreme Court is acting to fundamentally transform our country, making us less free and at the mercy of the dark money donors at the Federalist Society who got them their seats.
Remember: five of the nine current Justices were appointed by presidents who received fewer votes than their opponents.
One Justice is directly implicated in the January 6th insurrection―and that’s not even one of the three who was appointed by a treasonous president.
Americans' views of the right-wing court were already at an all-time low―and that was before multiple justices were found to have received hundreds of thousands of dollars in trips and gifts from billionaires with business before the Court. The legitimacy crisis is here―it’s time to act!
Sign now: Pass the TERM Act and rein in this corrupt Supreme Court!
Thanks,
Alex Lawson Social Security Works
