When I first ran for office in 2018, the odds were stacked against me.
My district was one of the most rural in the country, nearly 90% white, and had supported Donald Trump two years earlier. My opponents ran racist ads against me, and despite me spending most of my life in upstate New York, they tried to paint me as an outsider – based solely on the color of my skin.
But in the end, I won and became the first person of color to represent upstate New York.
I’m doing everything in my power to help elect Democrats in tight races like mine, but I can’t do it alone. I need grassroots supporters like you on the team!
