Friend,

Here’s a hard truth: Prop 8 -- the right-wing effort to end marriage
equality in California in 2008 -- is still on the books.

Even though all Californians can marry whom they want thanks to the
Supreme Court decision in Obergefell v Hodges, if the Court were ever to
reverse its opinions -- like it did with abortion access two years ago --
gay marriage would once again be illegal in California.

The possibility of the court reversing itself on marriage equality is not
just a vague concern: Over the past two years, Justices Alito and Thomas
have voiced their strong disapproval of the Obergefell decision, calling
for the court to reconsider it.(1,2)

In the early days of Courage California (then, known as Courage Campaign),
our members organized their hearts out in support of marriage equality,
and many of you got married when Prop 8 was struck down. This November, we
can get rid of Prop 8 once and for all, with Prop 3, the marriage equality
initiative on the ballot in November. We want to put a personal face on
the issue of marriage equality, so we are asking our members to tell their
stories about how Obergefell v Hodges changed their lives.

With the largest LGBTQ+ population in the nation, California has led the
way in both the legal and cultural fight for justice and inclusion for our
diverse communities.(3) Our state has passed over 200 bills and
resolutions to advance LGBTQ+ civil rights and social justice.(4) But,
with the stroke of their pen, the Supreme Court justices can take back
some of our hard-won progress.

Prop 3 can solidify marriage equality for good, even if Obergefell is
overturned.

There is proof that LGBTQ+ people telling their stories was crucial to
winning the national fight for marriage equality, and sharing our stories
helps to tell voters the importance of Prop 3.(5)

We are once again called to defend the legal rights of all Californians to
marry whom they choose. Whether you’re the parent or child of an LGBTQ
community member, are married to the love of your life, or just want to
share your perspective, we want your story. We’ll be joining with
thousands of other storytellers from the Yes on Prop 3 coalition to show
California just how they should vote in November.

are looking forward to hearing from you.

Yours in solidarity!

Lindsay (the Courage team)
