HuffPost: “Donald Trump Stokes Fears Of Another Jan. 6”

John,

Over the last week, we’ve heard more and more from Donald Trump that has made it clear that he wouldn’t necessarily accept the election results for what they are. Trump said:

“Our primary focus is not to get out the vote. It’s to make sure they don’t cheat. Because we have all the votes we need.”

If this sounds familiar John, it’s because months before the 2020 election, Trump warned that it would be “rigged.” And we all know what happened in the aftermath of the 2020 election:

– Trump called Georgia Secretary of State Brad Raffensperger and pushed him to “find” votes and reverse his loss in the state.
– Trump's legal team filed numerous lawsuits across several battleground states, challenging the election results.
– Trump corralled 84 fake electors across seven states to sign false electoral certificates claiming that Trump won the election in their states.
– Trump incited a deadly insurrection at the U.S. Capitol in an attempt to stop the certification of the election.

Donald Trump’s rhetoric now is a lot like his rhetoric in 2020. He’s laying the groundwork to challenge the election results if they don’t go his way–and John, here at CREW, we refuse to let Trump get away with attacks on our election.

After the 2020 election and the January 6th insurrection, threats to the election certification process actually increased substantially. This is a horrifying reality we will not shy away from.

CREW recently released a report identifying 35 rogue election officials across the country who have already refused to certify election results and may be willing to do so in the 2024 election.

John, we’ll be blunt: These rogue election officials and their dress rehearsals to disrupt election certification across the country are a serious threat to our democracy this fall.

The good news? We know how to fight back.

There are legal remedies like emergency court orders compelling county officials to follow the law, there are legal mechanisms authorizing courts to sanction, punish and replace county officials who defy court orders to certify election results and there are state constitutional protections of the right to vote and to have one's vote counted.

Our experts at CREW have done significant research, and we know that there are many ways that we can hold election officials accountable to their duty to certify free and fair elections. And if it comes to it, we’ll be ready to take action to hold them accountable, to protect the 2024 election and to defend our democracy more broadly.
