Vote Mama Monthly Newsletter
☀️[August 2024 Edition]☀️
While we enjoyed the final days of summer vacation this month, there was also no shortage of political action. We celebrated major primary election victories for our endorsed mamas, enthusiastically followed our mamas at the DNC, and joined in on building the overall Democratic enthusiasm heading into fall!
As we transition into September with just about 9 weeks left until the General Election, we are continuing to build on this positive momentum and remaining laser-focused on our targeted strategy to elect trailblazing pro-choice Democratic mamas.
Take a look at our August highlights!

ALUMNAE SPOTLIGHTS
We were energized by so many incredible speakers at the DNC, including Vice President Kamala Harris and Governor Tim Walz, as well as several incredible Vote Mama candidates and alumni including U.S. Sen. Tammy Baldwin and Michigan state Sen. Mallory McMorrow, who addressed the far-right policy plan Project 2025 in her fierce DNC speech. If you missed it, you can watch Senator McMorrow’s remarks here!

CANDIDATE SPOTLIGHTS
Vote Mama celebrated exciting elections wins with our 2024 endorsed mamas this August — namely in Michigan and Florida where we had 100% win rates in BOTH states!
MICHIGAN: In 2022, our mamas flipped the Michigan state House and Senate to win a Democratic majority for the first time in 40 years. This year, it's going to be our mamas who protect the Democratic trifecta by defending and expanding Democrats' slim legislative majority. A big congrats to our primary election winners in Michigan, who are now headed to the General Election for state legislature, state supreme court, and congress!
FLORIDA: Down in the Sunshine State, every single one of our Vote Mama candidates won their primary elections from school board to U.S. Senate!
- Debbie Muscarel-Powell will advance to November where she'll take on GOP Incumbent U.S. Senator Rick Scott (also known as the Boogeyman of Social Security). Let's flip this senate seat blue!
- In Florida's 13th Congressional District, Whitney Fox is looking to unseat Rep. Anna Paulina-Luna, a self-described "pro-life extremist" who supports a national abortion ban and authored a children's book claiming the 2020 election was stolen.
- Broward County School Board candidate Rebecca Thompson defeated the Governor Ron DeSantis-appointed opponent in District 2 with 66.1% of the votes, following this year's trend of the right-wing DeSantis falling out of favor with Floridians.
- Liz Barker also beat the long-time incumbent in her Sarasota County School Board district, demonstrating that Florida parents are motivated for change in education and school board leadership.
VOTE MAMA IN THE MEDIA
> A TIME Magazine article from this month in response to JD Vance's offensive "childless cat ladies" comments featured Vote Mama Foundation research to make a strong argument on what we need to make it easier for moms to run for office.
> Vote Mama Foundation's research and advocacy on the political participation of moms was also mentioned in a WBUR article on Boston Mayor Michelle Wu's announcement that she's expecting her third child, and how Wu has used her position to challenge public perceptions of motherhood.
> Lastly, an Inside Philanthropy piece on Pivotal Venture's work to build women's political power highlighted their transformational support of Vote Mama, specifically Vote Mama Foundation's efforts to expand the use of Campaign Funds for Childcare to all 50 states!
VOTE MAMA: BEHIND THE SCENES
Vote Mama held our staff retreat in Chicago in early August. This gave us a moment to rally together, refresh, and get organized, as we prepare for the marathon election season ahead.
“Care comes first” is one of Vote Mama’s core values, because we are regular people just like you, who are feeling the intensity of the political atmosphere. We’re all in on Vote Mama’s mission to increase the political power of moms, but we know how critical care of ourselves and our loved ones is to bring our best to the table in the important work we do. That’s why we also designated a Summer Shutdown week this August dedicated to rest and recharging!
Like so many Americans, we are feeling enthusiastic and hopeful about the future of our country following this month's DNC excitement. But in order to ensure that this positive Democratic energy translates into votes on November 5th, our mamas must continue building on the momentum and keep voters engaged for the next few months. That's why they're urgently counting on grassroots supporters like YOU to help boost their campaigns before time runs out.
Our August end-of-month fundraising deadline is TONIGHT, and we still need to raise another $2,109 by 11:59 P.M. to stay on track. So please John, will you kindly consider rushing $20.24 or more today to help keep our pro-choice Democratic moms fueled until the General Election?
