This past month has been one of the most challenging, and yet inspiring times in Australia's history.
I have always been very proud and grateful to be Australian, and on Anzac Day my pride was even greater [[link removed]] - as I watched Aussies come together on their driveways, balconies and in their lounge rooms - to pay their respects to those who made incredible sacrifices to give us the freedoms we will very soon return to.
I have also been inspired by our wonderful Aussie companies who have adapted [[link removed]] during these challenging times to assist in the manufacturing of vital items - including hospital beds [[link removed]], masks [[link removed]], gowns [[link removed]], face shields [[link removed]], ventilators [[link removed]] and sanitizer [[link removed]?].
As a Government, we are doing what we can to ensure this Aussie ingenuity isn't forgotten once borders re-open. Through the Manufacturing Modernisation Fund [[link removed]] we are backing local companies and creating around 2,600 jobs.
We are also assisting the tourism industry, through the JobKeeper package and $94.6 million in financial assistance [[link removed]?] for our treasured animal attractions. This will help cover fixed operational costs - such as food and vet bills - to ensure they are ready to re-open their doors when restrictions ease.
As we head into May and the prospect of a significant flu season, I encourage you to visit your local chemist or GP for a flu vaccination [[link removed]]. This won't protect you from COVID-19, but can assist in reducing the severity of influenza and therefore take pressure off our healthcare system.
As we begin to see light at the end of the coronavirus tunnel, I congratulate and thank you for cooperating with the recent restrictions. Of course, we're not out of the woods yet, and caution needs to continue.
Take care,
