Ribbon cutting celebrates new RapidRide G Line

King County Executive Dow Constantine joined city, county, federal and community leaders to celebrate the completion of major construction on the RapidRide G Line project [ [link removed] ], Metro’s eighth RapidRide line. Today’s ribbon-cutting ceremony in Capitol Hill paves the way for the start of service on *Saturday, September 14*. The new RapidRide G Line adds miles of red bus lanes, along with extensive upgrades and improvements to Madison St.

Highlights of the project include:

* 21 new RapidRide bus stops
* 2 upgraded bus stops
* 4 new center-running bus stations
* 8 miles of new or replaced sidewalks
* 1 lane-miles of concrete streets
* 3 lane-miles of new asphalt
* 4 miles of new dedicated bus lanes
* 5 new signals and 36 upgraded signals
* 108 newly planted trees

The RapidRide G Line will connect Downtown Seattle with First Hill, Capitol Hill, Central District, and Madison Valley, providing a vital link between these key areas and offering the highest quality bus service in the region. The redesigned Madison St. will improve safety around schools, small businesses, libraries, and hospitals, and the project also included sidewalk repairs, new walk and bike signals, and rebuilt utilities.

Repairs and testing for South Lake Union Streetcar started August 28

King County Metro and the Seattle Department of Transportation (SDOT) have been continuing to work together to repair the power system which runs the South Lake Union Streetcar. Metro has now received four replacement high-voltage control units, and plans to install and test the new electrical parts today.

People may see streetcars operating while the repaired power system is being tested, but passenger service has not yet resumed. Once power systems and trains are performing reliably, customer notifications will be sent announcing when service will be restored.

The First Hill Streetcar is continuing to run as normal. Nearby bus service continues to offer alternatives to riders who need to travel between downtown Seattle and South Lake Union:

* *Route 70: *Timetable and route map. [ [link removed] ]
* *RapidRide C Line:* Timetable and route map [ [link removed] ].

Service on the South Lake Union streetcar route was suspended on August 9 [ [link removed] ] when specialized electrical control units in the power substations failed.
