Improving Accessibility to Student Loans

The Free Application for Federal Student Aid (FAFSA) process is an important yearly ritual for families and students to get necessary aid for college. For years, the FAFSA process has operated smoothly, but now delays caused by mismanagement has created undue confusion and difficulty for applicants.

Earlier this year, I called on the Federal Student Aid (FSA) former Chief Operating Officer Richard Cordray, to repair the FAFSA process. COO Cordray has since resigned, but many of the problems remain unfixed. Despite his departure, parents and students have continued to reach out to let me know that FAFSA is still an issue for many families.

With the FAFSA issues still unresolved, earlier this month I began to hear from institutions of higher education who also were having difficulties caused by the botched rollout. This week, I relayed concerns from those tech schools and colleges to the U.S. Department of Education. Given the importance of education to our young students and the high cost of higher education, it is vital that we have transparency with where our education dollars are going. The Department of Education must get these challenges resolved.

FAFSA has long been a vital tool for many American families working to afford higher education, and the troublesome roll out of changes to this application process has had severe repercussions across higher education. Our students and their families deserve full transparency.

Reigning in Back-to-School Prices

With our students returning to the classroom, parents across our community have been busy gathering school supplies.

Between clothes and shoes, classroom supplies, and electronics, it's estimated that the average family will spend about $875 for a K-12 student this year—$39 billion in total. Capital One Shopping Research tags the price for school supplies alone at a little over $140 per household on average. In the past five years, the average household back-to-school budget has increased approximately 30%.

While high prices are harming hard-working Americans, I am focused on bringing down costs for families by controlling spending at the federal level and supporting an above energy plan that unleashes American energy.

Remembering Our Fallen Heroes

Image

On August 26, 2021, thirteen brave American servicemembers' lives were unjustly taken from us following a suicide bombing at Hamid Karzai International Airport. The blasts came in the last few days of an American-led evacuation which officially ended a 20-year presence in Afghanistan.

This week marked three years since this tragic event. These men and women made the ultimate sacrifice. Their heroism will never be forgotten.
