Many Americans struggle with food insecurity, and it’s critical that leaders at the local, state, and federal levels address this growing issue faced by so many American families. At 12:15pm on Tuesday, I will be hosting a Zoom town hall on food insecurity and how we can ensure no American goes hungry. For our expert panel, I’ll be joined by Jen Lamplough, the Chief Impact Officer of the Northern Illinois Food Bank, Kate Maehr, the Executive Director and CEO of the Greater Chicago Food Depository, and Rebecca Wolfe, the Senior Food Policy Analyst at Food and Water Watch. You can RSVP to join my town hall here.

On Monday, I joined with the Service Employees International Union (SEIU) and the Care Can’t Wait Coalition in Chicago to kick off the organization’s bus tour across seven states to highlight the need for action on child and home care. In my remarks, I stressed the need to ensure that American workers can find quality, affordable childcare, senior care, and care for those with disabilities. I was proud to stand with members of the coalition and SEIU to make it clear that now is the time for Congress to act to strengthen family and sick leave for all workers so that they can properly care for their families.

On Tuesday, I visited the Argonne National Laboratory in Lemont to speak with attendees of the ReCell Center Industry Collaboration Day event and discuss the groundbreaking advancements underway at the lab. Argonne, which is owned by the U.S. Department of Energy and administered by the University of Chicago, has developed the Aurora Exascale Supercomputer, the most powerful AI supercomputer in the world. The Aurora Supercomputer and the ReCell Center are working to find solutions that will strengthen our national security and our economy by researching new cures for diseases like cancer and innovative ways to fight climate change, including through developing new technologies to reuse and recycle advanced batteries. As a former engineer myself, seeing the incredible scientific developments firsthand was particularly fulfilling, and I was grateful to speak with the lab’s leading researchers and innovators about how to keep our country at the forefront of cutting-edge technology.

On August 6th, I held a virtual town hall on the importance of gun safety and the need for more legislation to address the issues of gun violence. During the town hall, the Illinois Firearm Restraining Order Act was discussed. This law, which went into effect January 1, 2019, allows families, households, and law enforcement to petition their local circuit court to temporarily remove firearms and ammunition from an individual’s possession if they pose a significant danger to themselves and others. You can read more about this law and how it can be used to protect our families and community on my website by clicking here.
